introduction

Last week we talked about the Gibeonites and Israel's alliance to protect them. Of course, deception was involved, but Joshua acted with integrity and kept his promise to the Gibeonites.

I Joshuahe meetsThey areBundWith Gibeon -

I. Joshua fulfills his covenant with Gibeon -

Joshua 10:3-4

Josué 10:3–4 LBLA95

3Then Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sentmustHoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmut, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon say:4"Come up to me and help me, and let us attack Gibeon, because he made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel."

You just knew it had to happen. The Gibeonites had betrayed the other kingdoms of Canaan, so it was only a matter of time before the coalition of five kings took revenge. And of course the Gibeonites urged Israel to keep their word...

Josué 10:6–8 LBLA95

6So the men of Gibeon sentmustJoshua to the camp at Gilgal and said, Do not forsake your servants; Come quickly to us, rescue us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the mountains have gathered against us.7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty warriors.8LosknightHe said to Joshua, Do not be afraid of them, for I have given them into your hands; none of them will stand against you.”

Joshua 10:

And with God on your side, how could you miss...

And that's what God did for Israel...

Josué 10:10–11 LBLA95

10It's atknightHe confounded them before Israel and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and pursued them on the way to Betoron and smote them as far as Azekah and Maceda.11When they fled IsraelwetterThey were on the descent of Beth-horon, whichknighthe hurled great stones at them from the sky as far as Azeca, and they died; There wasmore than fell from the hail than the children of Israel were slain by the sword.

Joshua 10:10-

God appeared so great here that he sent a great hail upon the enemy. But that's not even the bulk of the events that happened during this battle. We'll get to that in a moment. But first, there's a life principle you'll want to see here...

STARTWhen our intentions line up with God's intentions, He likes to show off on a grand scale.

Israel's purposes here were fully in line with God's purposes. Again, they were just a small part of what God was doing.

God was bold here in proving himself on Israel's behalf by hurling hail against the enemy. But God's boldness pales in comparison to Joshua's bold request...

Here, in verses 12 and 13, after God and the army of Israel have caused the coalition army of five kings (the Amorites) to flee, Joshua offers what is perhaps the most daring prayer in the Bible... perhaps the most daring prayer. daring of the Bible. 🇧🇷 boldest in history. 🇧🇷

Josué 10:12–14 LBLA95

12Joshua then agreedknightin the day, in the dayknightHe betrayed the Amorites before the children of Israel and said before Israel:"O sun, stop at Gibeon, and oh moon in the valley of Ajalon.”13Then the sun stopped and the moon stopped,Until the nation took revenge on its enemies. Is it not written in the Book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and didn't hurry to goLowfor a whole day.14There was no such day before or after him that theknightheard a man's voice; For himknightHe fought for Israel.

Joshua 10:12

...and the moon took its place (or stood still).

There has been a lot of research, speculation and even fake news about this event in history. But I'm not going to engage in a scientific analysis that calls into question the miracle of God.

Despite different interpretations and assumptions, the simplest understanding of this passage is that the Earth stopped rotating for a period of time. As wonderful (or impossible) as it sounds, the Bible says so.

Our lesson today is not the miracle. The Bible says the miracle happened, that's enough for me. I leave it to scholars to discuss how this happened. In fact, miracles can withstand the scrutiny of science. In the end, scientists are amazed and amazed every time a miracle happens. It's not my problem that they can't justify a miracle.

Suffice it to say that God set the earth, sun and moon in motion, He can stop and restart that motion whenever He wants.

Now Joshua could have asked God to repeat the great hailstorm he had just sent to defeat the army of the coalition of five kings.

But Joshua is getting bigger... MUCH bigger...

In effect, Joshua is asking the god of time and space to stop time itself so that the Israelites can continue to pursue their enemy and win the battle. And God actually granted his request.

I think the far greater lesson here is not in the study of the miracle itself, but the real lesson here is Joshua's boldness in making such a request of God. Joshua evidently had enough faith to believe that God could and would do whatever was asked of him.

STARTBold prayer requires bold faith in God.

Jesus believed with unwavering faith - Mark 11:23

Marcos 11:23 LBLA95 See More

23"Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Go down and throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will happen.guaranteedfor the.

Jesus clearly taught boldness. In fact, Christianity is all about boldness...

Peter and John prayed boldly - Acts 4:29-31

When Peter and John were arrested and interrogated by the temple guards for preaching the resurrection of Jesus Christ, they preached the gospel message to the Sadducees, the high priest, and the religious elite there while being interrogated.

After being questioned and warned not to continue preaching the gospel, Peter and John returned to the other disciples. After reporting the facts, the following prayer was said:

Acts 4:29-30 ESV95

29"And now, Lord, heed their threats, and let your servants speak your word with full confidence,30when you stretch out your hand to heal and signs and wonders are performed in the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

His prayer was not, "Lord, save us from their threatenings." But: "Lord, hear these threats and make us more courageous in preaching the gospel!"

And God replied:

Acts 4:31 NIV

31And when they had prayed, the place where they were gathered together shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, andit startedSpeak the word of God boldly.

Why do so many Christians fear their faith and fear God?

We can see examples of bold faith in the Bible, but we are analytical enough to doubt that God really appears to us in the here and now we live in today.

Part of the problem is that we mix our beliefs with magic dust. We can't just sprinkle a little God on something to make things happen our way. That's what we think prayer is! Magic Fairy Dust!

Bold prayer is NOT

Bold prayer is NOT...

1. Make declarations/claims before God

I have friends who buy the “Name/Claim” brand of the prosperity gospel. They learned that as long as they had enough faith, they had the right to force God to fulfill his commandments.

This is a mistake. There is not a shred of biblical evidence that this is how God works.

God is not a vending machine.

God works according to His purposes, and when He answers our prayers, it is because He loves to do so and because our prayers are closely aligned with His purposes.

2. Telling God what to do

We have no right to say anything to God. We have every right to ask him, even to beg. But we do so with an attitude of total submission to his will.

God is not a waiter in a restaurant.

3. Refusing to take NO for an answer

I have a bad habit of pestering God about things. Probably because I'm not very patient in waiting for God to agree his will with mine.

Repeating the same prayer over and over (which is outside God's will) does not:

change God's purpose

reconcile our request with your intention

Advancing God's Plan Faster

God does not change according to our whims.

4. Positive thinking

Some people's prayer life goes something like this...

"God, I wish you would do this..."

"God make me rich."

"God, give me a son."

"God, stop my husband from cheating on me."

They are weak prayers that show a lack of maturity, a lack of dependence on God, a poor understanding of how God works and what His purposes are.

God is not a magical genie.

Now that we know how not to pray boldly... Let's see what we need to know...

What You Need to Know About Bold Prayer

Read Joshua's prayer again:

Joshua 10:12-

God answers courageous prayers. In fact, I'm convinced that sometimes God waits for a bold prayer before He answers us becauseHe knows that bold prayer shows total dependence on Him, and in the end, bold prayer brings great honor and glory to His name.

He answered... in His time and in His way, He answered His prayer in a bold and wonderful way.

I won't tell the story... It's her story to tell and honestly, she tells it better than I do.

4. BomYOU MAYjIT MAKESSay no."

Certainly there are times when God answers our prayers negatively.

Ephesians 3:20–21 LBLA9

I asked God to take away my pride and God said NO. He said it's not up to him to take me away, it's up to me to give up.

I asked God to heal my disabled daughter and God said NO. He said that while his spirit is complete, her body is temporary.

I asked God to take away my pride and God said NO. He said he wasn't supposed to take it from me, I was supposed to give it up. I asked God to heal my disabled daughter and God said NO. He said that while his spirit is complete, his body is temporary.

4. When we follow God's Word, we expect God's answer-

I asked God to give me patience and God said NO. He said that patience is a by-product of tribulation, it is not given, it is earned.

I asked God to give me luck and God said NO. He said he gives blessings, happiness depends on me.

I asked God to spare me the pain and God said NO. He said suffering takes you away from worldly concerns and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow and He said NO. He said I must grow alone, but he will prune me to make me fertile.

I asked God to help me love others as much as He loves me, and God said, "Oh, you finally get it!"

5. God's Word Calls Us to Pray Boldly-

6. God Can Overcome Our Bold Prayers-

God says "no" when:

1. Our requests are not in accordance with Your will.

2. We need to grow spiritually

3. When he protects us from our own desires.

4. When there are unconfessed sins in our lives

5. When the time is not right

How should we react when God says no?

We should...

1. Examine ourselves for unconfessed sins

2. Realign our will with God's will

3. Understand how God works

4. Rest in the Lord

5. Embrace spiritual growth

STARTIf God refuses your prayer, don't give up. Just pray that the Lord will reveal His will and His way to you.

Conclusion

We as believers MUST have bold prayer and bold faith in our lives!

In fact, our belief is based on a bold statement...

We pray to God and ask Him to save us from our sins based on our faith in His Son Jesus Christ. We have unshakable faith when we trust that Jesus Christ died on the cross to take away our sins.

And God dares to answer us by forgiving our sins (however serious they may be). And we can claim Him as our God and walk in that forgiveness to work with Him here on this earth.

Maybe today you will be able to make that decision... that decision to follow Jesus and ask God to forgive your sins.

Maybe you just haven't lived a bold Christian life and need to refocus your life on Jesus and boldly live for Him again.

I invite you to come down and talk with me while we sing.

Joshua crushed the coalition of five kings and soon after conquered northern and southern Palestine. Canaan was conquered and the nation of Israel had a homeland.
